6/30 Zine

It's the last day of TERPart for 2016 so lets end it with a collaboration Zine. I included some examples from pintrest above and pika pika land below if you haven't made a zine before but I used to make zines in art school and it's a fun way to wrap up the everyday renaissance experience.

Design a page that's a piece of computer paper folded in half (5 1/2 x 8 1/2) and the unifying theme will be the positives that you've learned and taken away from this creative challenge experience.  Include art, words, collage, or whatever but use it as a reflective process.  Photograph the piece and I'll arrage all of the pages into a small art zine that can be printed and shared.  I hope you enjoyed it, have a great summer and stay creative!

6/29 Highlights- Artist Trading Cards

We have five people who joined in our Artist Trading Card exchange so far so I'm looking forward to seeing the artwork that we'll be sharing, here are a few of the highlights so far:

6/29- Artist Trading Card

It's the day before the last day of TERPart so I thought I'd like to repeat one of the favorite challenges from last summer-Artist Trading Cards. Last year we had a small exchange which you can see on the Vine video above and the content is totally open, just create the work on a 2 1/2" x 3 1/2" piece of paper or board. If you want to trade ATC's try to make between 3-7 cards and send me a confirmation email at needlesart@gmail.com and I'll reply with the instructions which are pretty simple. Have fun, be creative and share the results with hashtag #TERPart and #k12artchallenge

6/28- Figure Drawing

I think it's always helpful to keep your figure drawing skills sharp so today's challenge will be to draw or paint from life.  I like to sit and draw strangers but it's takes some speed and patience but you can draw anyone include pets or yourself.  You can keep it informal and create a page of sketches like my example above or really out some more time into it and create a more complete drawing.  Use any media and share it with hashtag #TERPart and #k12artchallenge.

6/24 Highlights- #FF Allie Brosh & The Oatmeal

I hoped everyone enjoyed checking out Allie Brosh & The Oatmeal's work, here are a few highlights from the last 2 #FF Follow Friday's!

6/24 #FF Allie Brosh & The Oatmeal

Today's #FF goes out to 2 of my favorite cartoonists who both have a similar simplicity in their drawing style and sense of humor- Allie Brosh of Hyperbole and a Half and Matthew Inman of The Oatmeal. Their work is fun and taps into that childlike perspective that as an artist and an art teacher I absolutely love- also both deal with real issues in their works ranging from politics to depression. Check out their comics and create a work of art that features your childlike perspective in an interesting and original way!

6/23- Gratitude

Today is my last day of school for the year and it's always filled with mixed emotions but I find a great way to end the chapter is with gratitude which is today's challemge.

I took part in Creative Live's 28 to Make challenge earlier this year and created a unique thank you card using ink, an acrylic Gelli print, and some Photoshop skills that you can see below.  Gratitude is such an important thing to remember as an educator and artist, especially when we work so closely with others.  Spend some time today making a creative gift of gratitude and share it with someone.  Post your results using hashtag #TERPart and #k12artchallenge.

6/22 Highlights- Gift

As many of you know today is my birthday so todays challenge is gift. Giving a gift can be rewarding in itself so the challenge today is to make a work of art and give it away. You can give it to someone special, give it to someone who you haven't spoken to in a long while, or put it out in the world for someone else and give it to a stranger. I've had fun posting artwork out in the world for others, it has lead to one of my most successful art projects in the past so enjoy the gift of giving and share it with #TERPart and #k12artchallenge.

6/10 Highlights- #FF Wayne White

I hope everyone enjoyed some of the creative work Wayne White makes, I love how he works in so many different media but manages to keep the same feel. Here's a few of todays highlights:

6/10 #FF Wayne White

Today's #FF challenge is based on one of my favorite contemporary artists- Wayne White.  Create a fun work inspired by the materials Wayne White uses such as text, cardboard, puppets, and antique paintings.

Here's a TED talk he gave that lets you know a little bit about his work.

6/9 Highlights- Creative Mastery

The 4 day creative mastery assignment was an interesting challenge that produced a real variation of art work.  Working from the same subject for multiple works was interpreted differently by all of us so I'd really like to share all of the work, it was really impressive! I posted a few highlights here but I'll add more as we post the 4 pieces together later today.

6/6 Creative Mastery

This week we will focus on building real creative mastery with a special challenge of tackling the same subject for 4 days in a row.

I was always blown away by the fact that artists like Monet and Matisse created so many works based on the same subject.  Monet was famous for making multiple works in studying the light and changes on the facade of Rouen Cathedral and the haystacks in Giverny.  Artists like Camille Pissarro was also known for his series of the Boulevard Montmartre at different times and Matisse create multiple studies of a subject at the same time and was known to literally white out the work and remake it again on the same canvas until it was mastered.

You choose a subject and choose how you will approach the repetition- draw multiples on top of each other, paint the same subject at different times, or just give different perspective of the same thing over 4 days- be creative and make it work for you.  The subject can be simple of complex, you can focus on details and changes or the similarities over time.  You can share your creative process each day using the hashtag #TERPart and share the final series on Thursday.  I'm really interested in see the process here because it should be a learning experience for all of us- this is the kind of experiment which we've all heard of but never give ourselves time to try, so good luck!

6/4 Highlights- Get Lost and Draw

Today seem like a really successful creative day for everyone who has participated, the artwork has a greater sense of confidence. It might be that it's the weekend or maybe we are getting the creative juices flowing in but either way let's keep it up, it's great to see! Here are some of the highlights from today:

Also I found myself inspired to create other types of work today and I want to open the invitation to all of you that if the prompt or anything in the creative process is pulling you in a direction feel free to go with it and see where it takes you then share the experience.

6/4- Get Lost and Draw

It's the weekend!  Every weekend with #TERPart the emphasis will be on doing something interesting and creating work in response to it.  Today your challenge is to get lost and draw.

Go somewhere you've never been- it can be a different way to drive home, a new restaurant, or just google where you are choose a local place you've never been.  Go anywhere you haven't been then draw-any kind of drawing is great on any kind of surface- draw in your sketchbook or draw without looking on a menu- anything goes, be creative (extra points if you can incorporate items from the location into the drawing itself)!

I used to be uptight about knowing where I was and not getting lost then I began to question that idea and started to intentionally get lost exploring and seeing it as an adventure.  This idea was tested on my first trip to Japan and China when I truly had no idea where I was going and would be lost for longer stretches but rather than letting anxiety and panic set hold I choose instead to just enjoy the moment.  I remember getting on a boat in Hong Kong that I was hoping might lead me to Lantau Island to see the Tian Tan Buddha but not being sure or able to really ask anyone, so I enjoyed the ride.  I managed to eventually end up in the right place and it taught me how powerful it can be to let go of the illusion of control.

If you want some drawing inspiration check out the video below from a great local artist Tommy Kane.  His drawings are amazing and I love watching his process.

6/3 Highlights- #FF Oliver Jeffers

I loved the creative reactions to the work Oliver Jeffers today, there was such a varied response. Here are a few of the highlights:

6/3: #FF: Oliver Jeffers

Each Friday in the #TERPart challenge will be dedicated to featuring an artist that's innovative, interesting, and creative and today's follow Friday (#FF) prompt is inspired by the great artist, illustrator, & author Oliver Jeffers.  Today's challenge is to look at his work and find something that intregues you then create a creative visual response.

I've always loved Oliver's creative design, conceptual artwork and picture books like The Day the Crayons Quit.

I recently had the opportunity to visit Jeffers' studio in Brooklyn and gained a deep appreciation of his work and design and really love the spirit he brings to his work.  It was such an inspirational creative space and it really made an impact-here's a peak!

I particularly love his is dipped painting series which beyond its obvious aesthetic appeal has an interesting backstory which you can learn about below:

6/2 Highlights- The Creative Quote
